The Montreal Canadiens have found themselves quite the playmaker on the backend.
Rookie blueliner Lane Hutson recorded an assist in Monday's 3-2 shootout win against the Anaheim Ducks, giving him points in seven straight and setting a new franchise record for the longest point streak by a rookie defenceman.
The left-shot defenceman surpassed Glen Harmon and Chris Chelios' six-game streak with the Canadiens. Hutson is now tied for the fourth-longest point streak by a rookie defenceman since 1988-1889, while Shayne Gostisbehere holds the NHL record at 15 games.
The Canadiens selected Hutson in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft out of Boston University, where his dynamic offensive skillset was on display. In 77 games, he scored 30 goals and had 97 points, and was among the top-10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award last season.
The 20-year-old has appeared in all 28 games for the Habs this season, recording 19 assists while averaging nearly 23 minutes per night. Hutson made his NHL debut at the end of last season and had two assists in two games.
The Canadiens host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday, giving the young star the chance to continue his point streak. Eight games would tie him at third-longest in NHL history.
