The NHL has postponed Friday's game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Buffalo Sabres due to a severe winter storm expected to hit the Western New York region.
The game has been rescheduled for March 4.
The NHL said the decision was made "due to the severe winter storm expected to impact the area."
Buffalo's game against the Philadelphia Flyers scheduled for March has now been moved up to Jan. 9.
According to the National Weather Service, Buffalo could experience wind gusts up to 65 m.p.h. and lead to power outages across the region.
The NFL's Buffalo Bills had their Nov. 20 home game against the Cleveland Browns moved to Detroit's Ford Field due to a lake-effect snowstorm.
The Bills visit the Chicago Bears on Saturday and announced on Wednesday they will leave on Thursday night -- a day earlier than usual -- to try to avoid the bad weather.
Chicago also is expected to be hit hard by the same storm system on Thursday and Friday, though the snow is supposed to stop before the game. However, frigid temperatures are expected with the high just -12 C, along with winds of 43 km/h.
