Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Ryan McDonagh has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the current CBA, for cross-checking Florida Panthers forward Mason Marchment in Game 5 of their first-round series, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced Tuesday.
Lightning forward Pat Maroon was also fined $3,879.31 for his unsportsmanlike conduct at the end of Game 5.
McDonagh’s cross-check happened mid-way through the first period, shortly after Marchment hit him along the boards in the Panthers’ defensive zone. Moments later, the players engaged with each other near the team benches and McDonagh’s stick rose to catch Marchment in the face. McDonagh was assessed a minor penalty for roughing on the play.
Maroon’s incident came with 15 seconds left in the 4-1 Lightning loss when he cross-checked Panthers forward Noel Acciari in the face after a faceoff. He was assessed a minor penalty for cross-checking and a 10-minute misconduct.
