Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews has won the 2022 Hart Memorial Trophy, the first Leaf to win the award since 1955 and only the third to win in franchise history. In addition to capturing his first Hart Trophy, Matthews also took home the Ted Lindsay Award and the Rocket Richard Trophy this year.
The hockey world set Twitter ablaze to congratulate one of the NHL's most exciting players, while also throwing in some good-natured jabs at his team.
Matthews had a record-breaking season that earned him the Ted Lindsay Award, in addition to his second Rocket Richard Trophy in a row. To many, he was the undisputed MVP last season as well.
Matthews also made history, becoming the first player of Mexican heritage to take home the honour. He joins a list of NHL superstars to win the Hart Trophy at 25 years old or younger.
Of course, NHL Awards host Kenan Thompson couldn't resist closing out the show with a joke at the expense of the Leafs.
The Hart Memorial Trophy is voted on by the the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA). Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid and New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin finished second and third place in Hart voting, respectively.
