It just keeps going from bad to worse for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Down by multiple goals at home in Game 4 and trailing in the first-round series, leading scorer and Rocket Richard Trophy winner Auston Matthews did not return for the third period against the Boston Bruins. The team later announced he was ruled out for the remainder of the game.
Head coach Sheldon Keefe said Matthews was pulled by team doctors due to an illness. Keefe revealed prior to the game that Matthews was recovering from an illness which forced him to take maintenance days between games in the series.
Matthews had 14:16 of ice time across the first two periods.
The Maple Leafs lost the game 3-1 and now trail the series by the same margin. Game 5 in Boston is set for Tuesday night.
