The Toronto Maple Leafs have clinched second place in the Atlantic Division and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs after beating the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 on Tuesday night.
Leafs star Auston Matthews scored two goals to give him 60 for the season.
The Maple Leafs are still waiting to find out their opponent with three days to go in the NHL season. The most likely candidate is the Tampa Bay Lightning, who with 108 points need to win just one of their final two games to clinch third in the Atlantic Division but the Boston Bruins — with 105 points and two games remaining — have an outside shot at jumping the Lightning still.
"We're working towards something bigger," Matthews said after clinching the No. 2 seed. "Definitely a moment for us to enjoy and be happy about.
"But the job's not done, the work's not finished."
