For a team looking to stay healthy ahead of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Saturday's game against the Detroit Red Wings was not an ideal night for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Shortly after forward Bobby McMann was ruled out for the game with a lower-body injury, defenceman Jake McCabe was rushed to the team's locker room after taking a puck to the face.
After the game, Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe appeared to have a good update on McCabe, while the severity of McMann's injury is still being determined. Keefe said that McCabe is fine, but couldn't return to the game due to the swelling around his eye.
"His vision wasn't impaired," Keefe said of McCabe's injury. "It has got better, if that trend continues he will be fine."
McMann appeared to suffer his injury late in the first period when his legs got tangled up awkwardly with Red Wings forward Alex DeBrincat.
McCabe's was an unfortunate break, as the defenceman was trying to block a shot and had the puck run up his stick and catch him under the visor. McCabe dropped to the ice before he was immediately rushed off the ice covering his face with a towel.
While not official yet, the Maple Leafs are most likely headed for a rematch of last year's second-round series with the Florida Panthers in the opening round of this season's Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Panthers clinched home-ice advantage in Round 1 on Saturday with a win over the Sabres.
