Toronto Maple Leafs forward Jason Spezza cleared waivers on Monday, while goalie Aaron Dell was claimed by the New Jersey Devils.
Spezza, 37, has an assist and a minus-1 rating in three games with Toronto this season. He has skated 7:44 per game in 2020-21, his 17th in the NHL. The Mississauga, Ont., native would have retired had he been claimed by another team, his agent said Sunday.
Dell, 31, had not skated for the Maple Leafs this season after signing as a free agent in October. With the Devils he will presumably compete with Scott Wedgewood and Eric Comrie to back up Mackenzie Blackwood, after Corey Crawford announced his retirement on Jan. 9.
In a fast-moving goalie market, Dell represents the fifth goalie claimed off of waivers since the NHL season began.
