Toronto Maple Leafs veteran centre John Tavares missed Saturday's morning skate due to illness.
Head coach Craig Berube later declared it was possible the 34-year-old would be able to play in Saturday evening's home opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins (7 p.m. ET on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+).
Teammate William Nylander indicated Tavares was fighting the illness on Wednesday in New Jersey.
The Leafs and Penguins are both 1-1-0 to start the season.
