  • Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies exits vs. Blue Jackets with upper-body injury

Matthew Knies' night ended earlier than anticipated.

The Toronto Maple Leafs left winger exited a home tilt against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday following a hard spill in the second period and did not return.

He was later ruled out by the team with an upper-body injury.

With less than three minutes to go in the second frame and the Leafs trailing 3-0, Knies appeared to go in for a hit on Blue Jackets winger Kirill Marchenko but ended up getting the worst of it. The 22-year-old got tangled up during the collision and landed awkwardly.

Knies did not return for the third and Nick Robertson got bumped up into his spot on the top line.

The former second-rounder in 2021 has 31 points (18 goals, 13 assists) through 46 appearances in 2024-25. He's yet to miss a game for Toronto this season.

Knies entered Wednesday's outing on the heels of his second-most productive performance of the year on Monday, racking up two goals and an assist in a 5-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

His exit against Columbus came after 13:41 of ice time with one shot and three hits.

Following the Maple Leafs' 5-1 loss, head coach Craig Berube did not have an update on the severity of Knies' injury but said he would know more on Thursday.
