Alex Nylander's time with the Toronto Maple Leafs has come to an end — for now.
The younger brother of Maple Leafs star forward William Nylander was placed on waivers Wednesday, along with defenceman Dakota Mermis, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported.
Alex Nylander signed a one-year, $775,00 deal with the Maple Leafs on Nov. 22.
With a number of Maple Leaf forwards dealing with injuries, Nylander suited up in five games for Toronto this season. He was a minus-1 with four penalty minutes and zero points over the five games.
Over the course of his eight-year NHL career, Nylander has 25 goals and 24 assists in 126 games with the Maple Leafs, Columbus Blue Jackets, Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres.
Mermis, 30, has not played a game for the Maple Leafs this season. He had three goals and five assists in 47 games with the Minnesota Wild in 2023-24.
