Just as the Toronto Maple Leafs get healthier on offence, the defence takes a hit.
Forwards Max Pacioretty and Max Domi were on the ice Monday morning but defenceman Jake McCabe was absent after being hit in the head with a shot in Saturday's win against Tampa Bay.
Head coach Craig Berube told reporters that McCabe will be day-to-day and will be held out of the game for precautionary reasons. Berube also noted that Domi is close to returning, but the team wants to see how he is after practice Tuesday.
The team also announced Monday that defenceman Jani Hakanpää has been placed on IR retroactive to Nov. 16 due to a lower-body injury. Marshall Rifai has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies.
Pacioretty has been out of the lineup since Nov. 9, and Domi last played Nov. 16. It is the first time both players have been on the ice since suffering lower-body injuries.
Hakanpää, 32, has played in only two games this season for Toronto after signing a one-year contract in the off-season. He last played on Nov. 16 against Edmonton.
The six-foot-seven defenceman suffered a knee injury late last season and did not make his season debut until Nov. 13.
Rifai has appeared in 17 games for the Marlies this season, recording two goals and two assists. The 26-year-old blueliner made his NHL debut for the Leafs last season.
Hakanpää joins the long list of players out of the lineup for Toronto. In addition to Pacioretty and Domi, forwards David Kampf, Calle Jarnkrok and Bobby McMann are all out due to injury, and winger Ryan Reaves is still serving a five-game suspension.
Captain Auston Matthews and winger Matthew Knies were activated off IR prior to Saturday's game against Tampa Bay. The Leafs host the Chicago Blackhawks Monday.
