The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed defenceman Timothy Liljegren on long-term injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain and recalled defencemen Simon Benoit and Maxime Lajoie.
Liljegren was injured in the Leafs loss to the Boston Bruins Thursday and was expected to miss "significant time," according to head coach Sheldon Keefe.
Liljegren needed assistance to the trainer's room and was favouring his left leg following a high-speed, first-period trip by Brad Marchand that sent him crashing hard into the end boards.
With Liljegren placed on LTIR, the defenceman will miss the chance to play in Sweden when the Leafs travel there for the NHL's Global Series on Nov. 17 and 19.
Defenceman Jake McCabe is also sidelined with a groin injury and is doubtful to play against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
Benoit was signed by the Leafs this past off-season but missed part of training camp with an injury. He has not played a game for the Leafs so far this season and has appeared in just two games in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies.
Lajoie joined the Leafs on a one-year, two-way contract this past off-season and has appeared in seven games with the Marlies.
