The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a goaltending change in Game 4 of their first-round series. But head coach Sheldon Keefe would not commit to a starter for next week's must-win Game 5.
Joseph Woll replaced Ilya Samsonov in the net to start the third period, with the Maple Leafs trailing the Boston Bruins 3-0 in the game.
"The reason for it, we're just trying to change things, get Joe involved," Keefe said after the game when asked to explain his decision. "As for what we'll do going forward, we've got some time to talk it through."
Samsonov, who had started every game in the series, had allowed three goals on 16 shots through the first two periods.
The third goal, by David Pastrnak in the final minute of the second, led to fans raining boos down upon the Leafs as the teams headed to the locker rooms.
Woll, 25, had a .907 save percentage in 25 games for the Maple Leafs this season. He made five saves in the final period in what ultimately was a 3-1 Bruins win.
The Bruins now lead the series 3-1 and can eliminate the Maple Leafs with a win in Game 5 on Tuesday.
