Maple Leafs reveal Black Excellence game logo

The Toronto Maple Leafs unveiled a new logo Wednesday ahead of their annual Black Excellence Game presented by Rogers.

The logo was designed by Toji Nola, a graphic designer from Newmarket, Ont.

“Black Excellence is about recognition — not just of the exceptional achievements of individuals within the community, but of the visibility and inspiration those achievements bring," Nola said in a team release. "The Toronto Maple Leafs are more than just a sports team – they're an institution with a legacy that spans generations, bringing families and communities together as a source of pride and inspiration.

"To collaborate with such a storied organization on a project that celebrates Black Excellence is an incredible honour. The Leafs’ involvement in this initiative shines a light on a community with its own rich heritage of excellence, amplifying the message of belonging, identity and pride in a way that resonates far beyond the game.”

In a social media video, Nolan said the biggest part of the design was adding the roots, which correspond to the 13 tips on the leaf — representing the club's 13 Stanley Cup championships.

"To know where you’re going, you have to know where you came from. ... It’s a sense of identity that roots represent," Nola said in the video.

He added: "I hope when people look at the design that these are things they can kind of draw on themselves well: A sense of leadership, community, resilience, excellence overall."

The Black Excellence logo will be incorporated in off-ice apparel for players and team staff.

The Maple Leafs will face the Carolina Hurricanes in the Black Excellence Game presented by Rogers on Saturday.
