The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed Kurtis Gabriel to a one-year, $750,000 deal.
Gabriel spent last season with the San Jose Sharks, appearing in 11 games. Across 49 career NHL appearances split between the Sharks, New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild, the 28-year-old has five points and 55 penalty minutes.
Beyond his on-ice contributions, Gabriel has been recognized for what he brings away from the rink, too.
After emerging as a devoted advocated for the LGBTQ+ community, Gabriel was named a King Clancy award finalist this past season. The honour, given annually to a player “who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community,” eventually went to Pekka Rinne for his work to raise money for cancer research.
