Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews, who left Monday’s game due to concussion protocols, said after practice on Wednesday that he feels good and expects to play tomorrow against the Calgary Flames.
Matthews had been held out of practice on Tuesday, but Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe expressed optimism that he would not be sidelined for long.
“He came in today feeling pretty good, so it’s a really good sign,” Keefe told reporters on Tuesday.
In the dying seconds of regulation against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday, Matthews got tied up with Nino Niederreiter in a positional battle off the rush and accidentally got clipped in the head by Brett Pesce’s knee as Matthews fell to the ice.
Following the blow, Matthews needed time before getting to his feet and skating off. He subsequently entered concussion protocol.
Matthews, who leads the Leafs in scoring with 29 goals and 22 assists for 51 points in 39 games, was not scheduled to practice on Tuesday, having previously been given the day off to recover from All-Star Game travel.
