The Toronto Maple Leafs will be without forwards John Tavares and Mitch Marner for Tuesday's game against the St. Louis Blues due to an illness both players are dealing with, the team announced.
In a corresponding move, the Maple Leafs recalled goaltender Dennis Hildeby and forward Alex Steeves from the AHL's Toronto Marlies on an emergency basis.
Toronto also loaned defenceman Max Lajoie to the Marlies.
With Morgan Rielly suspended five games, Marner and Tavares unavailable, and a plethora of other injuries, the Maple Leafs will be severely shorthanded against a Blues team that has won 7 of its past 10 games.
Defenceman Conor Timmins is out indefinitely after being diagnosed with mononucleosis Monday.
Goaltender Martin Jones is now listed as day-to-day due to an undisclosed injury that "popped up" Monday afternoon. With Jones hurt, Hildeby will back up starter Ilya Samsonov against the Blues.
This also marks the first Maple Leafs game since Tavares signed in 2018 that will not have Tavares, Marner and Rielly in the lineup, according to Sportsnet Stats.
The Maple Leafs have lost two of their past three games, and currently sit fourth in the Atlantic Division.
