Veteran forward Marcus Johansson is returning to the Washington Capitals for a playoff push after a trade from the Seattle Kraken.
In return, the Kraken receives forward Daniel Sprong, a 2022 fourth-round pick and a 2023 sixth-round pick. Seattle will retain 50 per cent of Johansson's contract, and now has 25 draft picks in the next two NHL drafts.
The 31-year-old Johansson was a first-round pick by the Capitals in 2009 and began his career with seven seasons in D.C. In 12 seasons with the Capitals, Devils, Bruins, Sabres, Wild and Kraken, Johansson has skated in 735 games — scoring 141 goals and 401 points.
He signed a one-year, $1.5-million contract with the Kraken in free agency before the season. This season he has six goals and 23 points, while averaging 16:35 minutes of ice time — mostly on the wing.
“We appreciate Marcus’ character and professionalism during his time with the Kraken and wish him well in Washington,” said Kraken general manager Ron Francis in a press release. “Daniel brings some speed and creativity to our roster and we’re looking forward to adding him to our team.”
Sprong, 25, is a pending unrestricted free agent with a $725,000 cap hit. He has eight goals and six assists in 47 games this season.
