In case there was any doubt, Mike Sullivan is expected to return as the Pittsburgh Penguins head coach next season.
After a seven-game, first-round Stanley Cup Playoff exit, rumours swirled about Sullivan’s future behind the bench. But according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, it doesn’t seem like there’s going be a coaching change in Pittsburgh.
“He’s a heck of a coach, he’s under contract for three more years,” said Friedman during the Headlines segment of Hockey Night in Canada. “I’d expect him to be back behind the bench in Pittsburgh, in case anyone had any questions,”
Sullivan has served as the Penguins’ head coach since December 2015. The Massachusetts native led Pittsburgh to back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2016 and 2017. He signed a four-year contract extension in 2019.
