NHL sets league-wide attendance record

More people watched NHL games in person than ever before this season.

Total attendance reached a record 23,014,458, surpassing the mark set last season, the NHL announced on Friday.

It's the first time the NHL has crossed the 23-million barrier, and the third consecutive season that the league has shattered its mark.

The final number represents 96.9 per cent of capacity in NHL arenas, which for the first time included the Delta Center, the home of Utah Hockey Club.

In addition to 32 home arenas, games were also played at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Ohio Stadium in Columbus, O2 Arena in Prague and Nokia Arena in Tampere, Finland.

The Montreal Canadiens led the league in attendance, selling out each game for a total of 865,305.
