Oilers' Oscar Klefbom ruled out for 2020-21 season

Edmonton Oilers defenceman Oscar Klefbom will miss the 2020-21 NHL season, general manager Ken Holland confirmed Monday.

As Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported in September, Klefbom was considering options on how to deal with injuries from last season, including undergoing surgery that could keep him out long-term. The 27-year-old was out of the lineup from mid-February until early March with a shoulder injury.

The Swedish defenceman had five goals and 29 assists last season, and played in all four of Edmonton’s playoff games, registering two assists. He also averaged 25:25 of ice time per game during the 2019-20 season, a large portion of time that may be difficult for the Oilers to replace.

Holland also announced that forward Gaetan Haas would miss the start of training camp because he was a close contact of a positive COVID-19 case in Switzerland earlier this month, which delayed his travel timeline.
