The Edmonton Oilers have traded wingers Kailer Yamamoto and Klim Kostin to the Detroit Red Wings in a move that frees up some cap space for the Oilers.
In exchange, the Oilers are receiving future considerations.
Yamamoto, who has a $3.1 million cap hit for next season, became expandable for the Oilers when his offence dried up last season. The 24-year-old had just 10 goals and 25 points in 58 games last season, and his role was diminished by the end of the campaign.
Kostin, also 24, had 11 goals and 21 points in 57 games last season. He is a restricted free agent who will need a new contract, and Oilers GM Ken Holland hinted earlier this week that Kostin was also considering contract offers from the KHL.
After the move, the Oilers now have $8.9 million in projected cap space according to PuckPedia. Edmonton still needs to come to terms with restricted free agent defenceman Evan Bouchard, a key contributor to its historic power play.
