Woll perfect in relief after Lightning onslaught chases Samsonov from net

It was not the start that Toronto Maple Leafs fans hoped for in Tampa on Saturday night.

After William Nylander scored off a beauty pass from John Tavares, the ice tilted in favour of the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the game started to veer out of control — and fast. Maple Leafs' goaltender Ilya Samsonov surrendered three goals on four shots, the final of which ended his night at Amelie Arena.

Nikita Kucherov, four-time NHL All-Star, scored two of the Lightning's three goals and notched himself three points in the first 13:29 of the game.

Joseph Woll, 25, came into the game in relief — his second start of the year.

The Maple Leafs have had issues keeping the puck out of their net to start the season, conceding three or more goals in the first five games of the season for the first time since 1992-93.

Saturday's game between the Maple Leafs and Lightning figured to be an exciting matchup on Hockey Night in Canada as the two teams have had a heated playoff rivalry spanning two seasons.

The Maple Leafs ended the Lightning's three-year streak of appearing in the Stanley Cup Final last season, after winning their Round 1 series in six games.
