Patrick Kane is set to make his Detroit Red Wings debut Thursday night when his team hosts the San Jose Sharks, eight days after the forward signed with the club.
The nine-time All-Star signed a one-year, $2.75 million contract on Nov. 28, reuniting him with former Chicago Blackhawks teammate Alex DeBrincat.
Kane underwent surgery on his hip during the off-season and, while rehabbing, met with different NHL teams.
Kane is aiming to join Ed Jovanovski and Nicklas Backstrom as NHL players to come back hip-resurfacing surgery. The operation involves dislocating the upper end of the thighbone, trimming it, capping it and removing cartilage before putting it back in place.
The 35-year-old spent the better part of 16 seasons the the Blackhawks organization, where he earned three Stanley Cups and a Conn Smythe Trophy, won in 2013. Over his career, he's also nabbed a Hart Memorial Trophy and an Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer.
At last season's deadline, Kane made a splash when he made clear he wanted to be traded to the New York Rangers. He put up 12 points in 19 games in his short tenure, but the Rangers suffered a disappointing first-round exit in the post-season.
Over his career, Kane has scored 451 goals and 786 assists. He was selected first overall in the 2007 NHL Draft by the Blackhawks.
