The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired the reserve rights to defenceman Thimo Nickl from the Anaheim Ducks for the reserve rights for right-winger Judd Caulfield, the team announced on Friday.
Nickl, a 21-year-old native of Klagenfurt, Austria was a 2020 fourth-round draft selection. He has spent the past two seasons with AIK of HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden's second-tier professional league.
In 47 games this season he has no goals and eight assists while tallying 69 PIM and a plus/minus of -9.
He played one year of junior hockey in the QMJHL with the Drummondville Voltigeurs, scoring 10 goals for 39 points in 58 games played.
Caulfield, 22, has spent the past four seasons playing college hockey with the University of North Dakota. The Grand Forks, ND native scored 10 goals for 19 points in 39 games played in his senior season.
He was originally a Pittsburgh Penguins 2019 fifth-round draft pick, 145th overall, out of the U.S. National Team Development Program and was teammates with Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras.
