Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan announced before Monday's Winter Classic that Kris Letang would not play and that the defenceman is with his family in Montreal after his father passed away.
Letang was expected to miss the game with a lower-body injury. He missed the Penguins' last game against the New Jersey Devils and did not participate in practice at Fenway Park on Sunday.
The 35-year-old missed five games earlier this season after suffering a stroke, remarkably returning to the lineup just 12 days later.
No other details were reported about Letang's absence or potential return to the team.
