Sam Cosentino on the player: Another interesting prospect in that he has seemingly slipped on many draft boards. Heidt fits into the category that many forwards in this draft class do: At 5-foot-10, 178 pounds he's a smallish, skilled, speedy forward. It’s hard to overlook his numbers from this season with 25 goals and 97 points, good enough to tie for fourth place in the WHL scoring race.
Of his Prince George franchise record 72 assists, 39 of them were accumulated on the power play. As his numbers suggest, he leans heavy on the playmaker side, and with excellent vision he’s able to open lanes for himself and is skilled enough to make difficult passes. He’s shoots it well enough that he has to be respected as a scoring threat as well. He’s sturdy, and can manage the puck in traffic.
He was a threat on many of his shifts in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, finishing with one assist and five shots and earning Team Red Player of the Game honours in a 4-2 loss. His last impression on the scouting community, traveling to Switzerland once the Cougars was eliminated, wasn’t as kind. Thought to be a big boost to Canada’s chances at the U18s, Heidt finished with two points in his five-game stint.
Jason Bukala's scouting report: His skill is his most attractive element. Leans playmaker more than shooter and is hard to defend. He has the ability to slip pucks around, and through opponents. His skating is mostly sound, but he does pick his spots, at times, to play fast.
Has top six NHL upside based on his skill, but his off the puck detail and secondary battle will have to evolve.
