New York Rangers centre Filip Chytil is set to miss the remainder of the season after suffering a setback on his upper-body injury at practice earlier this week, the team announced Sunday.
Chytil, 24, suffered the initial injury nearly three months ago in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Nov. 2.
He suffered a setback at practice on Friday after skating with the team for a second straight day. He was down for several minutes and was eventually helped off the ice by teammates Zac Jones and Jake Leschyshyn before being tended to by team trainers.
“Fil suffered a setback with regard to the injury he was dealing with,” Rangers coach Peter Laviolette said after a game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday. “He was evaluated this morning and will continue to be evaluated. He's at his house here in New York.”
Minutes before his latest injury, Laviolette said the plan was to increase Chytil's workouts during the upcoming All-Star break. Chytil returned to practice for the first time one day earlier while wearing a red non-contact jersey.
"The organization's top priority throughout this process has been Filip's health and we will continue to fully support him in his recovery with an aim to return for the 2024-25 season," the Rangers said in a press release Sunday.
Chytil posted on Instagram shortly following the announcement. The post read: "It has been the hardest 3 months of my life and has not been easy for my family, closest people and of course for whole NY Rangers organization. But we gotta stay positive even in these tough moments and just think What is ahead of us! Thanks to you all for nice messages! I’ll come back stronger than ever!"
He has played in 10 games for the Rangers this season, notching six assists in those outings.
The New York Rangers currently sit atop the Metropolitan Division with a 30-16-3 record.
