The New York Rangers did not place Jacob Trouba on waivers Friday amid growing speculation that the team was looking to trade its captain.
Earlier in the day, the Rangers said Trouba would be a healthy scratch for their game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman and reporters from other outlets said the Rangers were weighing trade options for Trouba, but the veteran defenceman would need to agree to the transaction due to his partial no-trade clause.
The possibility remains that Trouba could be traded but for now, his future is up in the air.
The Rangers are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak and have tumbled down to the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Trouba, 30, is in the sixth year of a seven-year, $56 million contract. The deal includes a modified no-trade list that allows Trouba to block a move to 15 teams, according to PuckPedia.
In 24 games this season, Trouba has six assists and is minus-three. He has been with the Rangers since a trade with the Jets in 2019 and has been captain since the start of the 2022-23 season.
