New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe was given a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for an illegal check to the head of New Jersey Devils forward Nathan Bastian and was ejected from the game.
Early in the first period, Rempe laid a heavy hit on Bastian while the Devils forward was bent over, making primary contact with his head. Bastian appeared to be in immediate pain and needed help in getting off the ice. He returned to the game for the second period.
Devils defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler stepped up and challenged Rempe after the fact.
The 22-year-old rookie has played two games for the Rangers so far this year, registering no points and a total of 9:47 TOI.
