Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde was given a game misconduct for an expletive-filled rant following a failed coach's challenge in Tuesday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The incident came mid-way through the game, after the Penguins had already chipped away at Detroit's 3-0 first-period lead with two goals in the middle frame. With the Penguins on the power play, Jeff Carter tipped a point shot toward the goal and the puck got caught up in the pads of Red Wings goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic. After making the save, Nedeljkovic continued to slide across the crease and Penguins forward Jason Zucker appeared to push him into the net with his stick.
Initially, the officials reviewed the play to determine if the puck entered the net. After it was confirmed that it had, the Red Wings then asked for a coach's challenge for goaltender interference, prompting a second review of the play. Following the lengthy process, the officials determined Zucker had not interfered with Nedeljkovic and that the goal would still count — putting the Red Wings short-handed again.
Cameras caught Lalonde with both his arms raised while he yelled at the officials.
"What the (expletive) are we doing here?" he appears to say multiple times before being ejected from the game.
Former San Jose Sharks head coach Bob Boughner took over leading the Red Wings bench in place of Lalonde.
