The Detroit Red Wings have hired Nicklas Lidstrom as the team’s vice president of hockey operations, reuniting him and general manager Steve Yzerman on the franchise they spent their storied careers playing for.
The Red Wings say that Lidstrom will be involved in “all aspects of hockey operations for the Red Wings in his new role.”
One of the most decorated players in NHL history, Lidstrom spent his entire 20-season career with the Red Wings. He joined the team as a third-round pick in the 1989 NHL Draft, and went on to serve as its captain in his final six seasons with the team from 2006-12, assuming the captaincy after Yzerman’s retirement.
Lidstrom’s No. 5 jersey was retired by the organization during the 2013-14 campaign, and he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015, his first year of eligibility.
