Vancouver Canucks defenceman Ian Cole thought his night was over when he was assessed a five-minute major for a hit from behind on Columbus Blue Jackets forward Justin Danforth.
However, after a lengthy review, it was his D-partner Tyler Myers who was done for the night instead.
In one of the more bizarre calls of the 2023-24 season, the referees switched up the call after going to video review and deciding that it was actually Myers' elbow on Sean Kuraly that deserved the five-minute major.
It was an unprecedented call that confused even some of the most well-versed hockey minds, especially with it coming in the third period of a tie hockey game.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said after that game that he reached out to the league and the explanation he received was that they wanted to "just get the call right."
Thankfully, the Canucks ended up killing the five-minute major and received a standing ovation from their fans. They then went on to win the game 5-4 in OT.
