The Boston Bruins are unlikely to re-sign pending unrestricted free-agent defenceman Dmitry Orlov says club general manager Don Sweeney, according to Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic.
The 31-year-old was a February trade-deadline acquisition of the Bruins, who gave up four draft picks — including a first-rounder in 2023 — in a three-way swap with Washington and Minnesota to obtain him.
Orlov was drafted with the 55th-overall pick in 2009 by the Washington Capitals and played 11 seasons there, winning the Stanley Cup in 2018.
The Russian played 43 games in the 2022-23 season for Washington, registering 19 points, and 23 games for the Bruins, tallying 17 points, helping the latter close out a historic campaign as they finished the season with an NHL all-time best 65 wins and 135 points.
However, Boston and Orlov could not get past the first round of the playoffs, as the franchise lost a closely fought series 4-3 to eventual Stanley Cup finalists Florida.
