The Edmonton Oilers, looking for a little spark, are throwing it back to a player who once recorded eight points in a game for the club.
Nope, not Wayne Gretzky or Paul Coffey, of course, but none other than Sam Gagner, who was signed Tuesday to a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000, Frank Seravalli reported.
Gagner, 34, is best known in Oiler circles for his stunning eight-point night on Feb. 2, 2012, against the Chicago Blackhawks. His four-goal, four-assist game was the first eight-pointer since Mario Lemieux in April 1989.
Gagner played last season with the Winnipeg Jets. In 1,015 career NHL games for the Oilers, Coyotes, Jets, Canucks, Red Wings, Blue Jackets and Flyers, Gagner has 192 goals and 327 assists for 519 points. Gagner was drafted sixth overall in 2007 by the Oilers.
In three games with the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL, Gagner has one goal and four assists for five points, with a plus-4.
It's likely Gagner will see fourth-line duties for the Oilers, who are off to a 2-5-1 start but coming off a win over the Calgary Flames at the Heritage Classic.
