The New York Rangers are sending a message amid a seven-game losing streak.
According to multiple reports, captain Jacob Trouba will not be in the lineup Friday against the Penguins due to "roster management" reasons.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports that Rangers have "several" trade options but Trouba can block them with his partial no-trade clause. The "Rangers have indicated they will waive (Trouba) if he does not accept one," and one of the teams involved is believed to be the Blue Jackets.
Larry Brooks of The New York Post was first to break the news.
Trouba's name had been in the rumour mill since the summer. On Nov. 25, after a 6-2 loss to the Oilers (the second loss during the current seven-game streak), Friedman reported that GM Chris Drury was "interested in making moves and shaking up the roster." Friedman mentioned Trouba and Chris Kreider, the longest-serving Ranger, as two names who could be considered.
Trouba, 30, is in the sixth year of a seven-year, $56-million contract. The deal includes a modified no-trade list that allows Trouba to block a move to 15 teams, according to PuckPedia.
In 24 games this season, Trouba has six assists and is minus-three.
