The Buffalo Sabres announced Saturday that 34-year-old forward Kyle Okposo will serve as the team's full-time captain, the 20th in franchise history.
"It's impossible to overstate what Kyle has meant to this group — he is patient, he is a lifelong learner, he is levelheaded, and most of all, he is proud to be a Buffalo Sabre," Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams said. "I am proud that Kyle will represent our organization with class and dignity."
Drafted seventh-overall by the New York Islanders in 2006, Okposo signed a seven-year, $42 million contract with the Sabres in 2016 and has since made Buffalo his full-time home.
"It's left a really special place in my heart where I want this place to succeed," Kyle Okposo said. "I want the Sabres to succeed."
Rasmus Dahlin and Zemgus Girgensons were named as alternate captains.
The team spent the 2021-22 regular season without a captain, after former Sabre Jack Eichel failed his physical and had his captaincy stripped on the first day of training camp. He was traded to the Las Vegas Golden Knights in November after serving as captain since 2018.
