Buffalo Sabres defenceman Mattias Samuelsson is set to undergo season-ending surgery due to an upper-body injury, the team announced Sunday.
Samuelsson, 23, has missed four out of the team's last six games, playing on Jan. 23 against the Ducks and Jan. 20 against the Lightning.
He suffered the injury on Jan. 13 in a 1-0 loss to the Vancouver Canucks, playing only seven minutes in the game.
Samuelsson has dealt with injuries throughout his career, never playing more than 55 NHL games in a season. He missed games earlier this season with various lower-body and undisclosed injuries.
Despite that, the Philadelphia native has played in 41 games this season, scoring one goal and notching seven points while maintaining a +4 plus/minus.
He is in the second year of a seven-year, $30 million contract that he signed in 2022.
