Buffalo Sabres defenceman Mattias Samuelsson was forced out of his club's game against the Vancouver Canucks Saturday with a lower-body injury after an awkward collision in the corner. The team announced he would not return.
The incident occurred in the second period of the tilt, when the 22-year-old went into the corner for a puck battle with Canucks forward Curtis Lazar. Turning to check Lazar as the pair approached the boards, Samuelsson appeared to twist his right leg as he fell.
He remained down on the ice in discomfort, holding his right knee, for quite some time before being helped off the ice and down the tunnel.
The Philadelphia native, who joined the Sabres as a 32nd-overall pick back in 2018, has played parts of the past two seasons with Buffalo. He's averaging just over 22 minutes of ice per night for the Sabres through the 2022-23 season so far.
Earlier this month, the Sabres signed Samuelsson to a seven-year, $30-million extension.
