Sabres GM trying to ink Dahlin, Power to contract extensions

Buffalo Sabres GM Kevyn Adams says he has started the process of trying to lock up top defencemen Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power to contract extensions.

Speaking to the media Wednesday, Adams said he met with agents for both defencemen earlier this month.

"We've made it clear to them we see them as really important people and pieces of our franchise moving forward, and they've made it clear to us they want to be here, so we'll keep working on it," he said. "But I'm excited about those guys."

Dahlin, 23, is entering the final season of a three-year, $18-million deal. The first-overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, Dahlin is coming off a huge season in which he recorded 73 points (15 goals, 58 assists) in 78 games.

The Swedish defenceman has 46 goals and 187 assists for 233 points in 355 career games.

Power is a finalist for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year after notching four goals and 31 assists in 79 games this season.

The native of Mississauga, Ont., was picked first overall in 2021. The University of Michigan product is entering the final year of his entry-level contract after playing eight games with Buffalo in 2021-22.

The Sabres, who finished one point behind the Florida Panthers for the final playoff spot in the East this year, have locked up several of their other rising young players to contract extensions, including forwards Tage Thompson and Dylan Cozens (both through 2029).
