Goaltender Devon Levi is expected to make his NHL debut when the Buffalo Sabres host the New York Rangers on Friday night.
The 21-year-old from Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que., signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Sabres earlier this month.
Drafted in the seventh round, 212th overall, by the Florida Panthers in 2020, Levi was traded to the Sabres in July 2021 along with a first-round pick for Sam Reinhart.
Levi backstopped Canada to a silver medal at the 2021 world junior championship. Despite playing with a broken rib that he sustained during the opening game, Levi finished the event with a 6-1-0 record, including three shutouts, and set an all-time tournament record with a .964 save percentage.
He also represented Canada at the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing and dressed as the backup for one game but did not play.
Levi posted a 38-22-6 record, 1.90 goals-against average and .942 save percentage over two seasons with Northeastern University. He captured the Mike Richter Award as the NCAA's top goaltender last year and has been named a finalist again this season.
The Sabres (35-31-7, 77 points) are five points back of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the second wild card spot with nine games remaining in the regular season.
