The Buffalo Sabres have brought back their young goalie.
Devon Levi was recalled from Rochester of the American Hockey League and will start between the pipes Sunday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, head coach Lindy Ruff announced. Defenceman Ryan Johnson was sent down in a corresponding move.
Levi has thrived in the AHL this season, going 7-1-1 with a .916 save percentage and a 2.08 GAA with two shutouts. However, he has struggled in seven games with Buffalo, recording a .870 save percentage and a 3.95 goals-against average.
The 22-year-old netminder experienced similar inconsistencies last season as well. He had the second-best save percentage in the AHL while ranking ninth in GAA, but allowed over three goals a game for the Sabres.
Backup goaltender James Reimer was initially expected to get the start against Toronto, but he too has struggled this season. In five games split between Buffalo and Anaheim, the 36-year-old has an .879 save percentage and a 3.60 GAA.
The Sabres are on a nine-game losing streak, and are only one point ahead of the Montreal Canadiens for last place in the Atlantic Division.
