The Buffalo Sabres will be shorthanded as they look to complete the rally back against the Montreal Canadiens.
Sabres forward Tage Thompson and defenceman Mattias Samuelsson both exited Monday's game against the Canadiens with lower-body injuries, the team announced.
Amidst the high-scoring outing, the Sabres also pulled goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen for Devon Levi after he allowed four goals on 18 shots. Then, in the third period, the Canadiens pulled goaltender Cayden Primeau for Sam Montembeault after he let in five goals on 14 shots.
Thompson exited the game early in the second period and did not return for the start of the third. It's unclear where or how the injury may have occurred.
Up to that point in the game, the 27-year-old had been on the ice for 6:49 and scored the team's opening goal. This season, Thompson has 11 goals and seven assists in 15 games.
Sabres coach Lindy Ruff did not have an update on his condition following the game.
“He’s a huge piece on our team and we need him out there,” Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin said.
Samuelsson, meanwhile, played his last shift mid-way through the second period. He appeared to suffer the injury in a scrum by his team's net. He stayed down on the ice for some time while Sabres and Canadiens players argued and fought around him.
The defenceman managed to skate off under his own weight but went back to the team's locker room and did not return for the third period.
Up to that point, Samuelsson had logged 6:49 TOI and had one hit.
The 24-year-old has one goal in 12 games this season. There was no update on his status after the game.
