Yaroslav Askarov has been demoted to the minors.
On Friday, the San Jose Sharks announced the goaltender was sent to the AHL's San Jose Barracuda.
The Sharks now have just two goalies, Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek, in its camp roster.
It's not the way the 22-year-old would want to start the season, but the decision could be due to the lower-body injury he suffered in September.
However, things are looking up for the youngster, as on Monday the netminder skated on his own for the first time during training camp, Max Miller of NHL.com reported. On Friday, Miller said Askarov will practice with the Barracuda as part of his rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, back on Sept. 21, the Russian told reporters that his injury was not significant, and he was crossing his fingers for a speedy return to the ice.
Askarov appeared in two games for the Nashville Predators last season, going 1-0-0 with a 1.47 goals-against average and a .943 save percentage. He’s appeared in three total NHL games, all with Nashville, recording a 2.58 GAA and .914 save percentage.
Askarov was a first-round pick by Nashville in the 2020 NHL Draft and was acquired in a trade by San Jose in August.
