Shane Wright will start the season in the American Hockey League after the Seattle Kraken re-assigned him to the Coachella Valley Firebirds.
Seattle received a special exemption to send the 19-year-old Wright to the AHL over his Ontario Hockey League team, the Windsor Spitfires.
Wright, who was the No. 4 overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, had one goal and one assist in eight games with the Kraken last season and also recorded six points (four goals and two assists) in eight games with the Firebirds.
He was the captain of Canada's gold medal-winning world junior team.
Wright returned to Windsor and added 37 points (15 goals and 22 assists) in 20 games. After the Spitfires were eliminated from the playoffs, he rejoined the Firebirds for their post-season run to the Calder Cup final and contributed nine points (two goals and seven assists) in 24 playoff games.
The Kraken also re-assigned defenceman Ryker Evans to AHL Coachella Valley. Goaltender Chris Driedger, defenceman Cale Fleury and forward John Hayden were placed on waivers for the purpose of being re-assigned to the Firebirds as well.
