The Ottawa Senators are inducting long-time defenceman Wade Redden into the franchise's Ring of Honours, the club announced Thursday.
“Wade was a great Senator, a poised, puck-moving defenceman who played in all situations,” said general manager Pierre Dorion in a press release.
“Wade’s understanding of the game was elite; he had the unique ability to make everyone around him a better player. We’re so happy that he’s receiving this honour and equally happy that he’s able to help pass on some of this impressive knowledge to our team as part of our development staff.”
Redden is the first player to be inducted. He joins the late Bryan Murray, who spearheaded the Senators as a coach and general manager from 2005 to 2016, as the second member of the team's Ring of Honour.
Daniel Alfredsson, Chris Phillips and Frank Finnigan, a member of the original Senators franchise from 1923-1932, all have their numbers retired by the team.
Longtime enforcer Chris Neil is due to have his No. 25 raised to the rafters at Canadian Tire Centre on Feb. 17.
Redden, who joined the Senators in a player development role in July, is the franchise’s career leader in plus/minus rating (plus-159), ranks fourth in games (838), fifth in points (410) and sixth in penalty minutes (576).
The 45-year-old played in 1,023 career regular-season games with Ottawa, the New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues and Boston Bruins, notching 457 points (109 goals, 348 assists) and 665 penalty minutes.
The native of Lloydminster, Sask. served as assistant director of player development for the Nashville Predators from 2016-17 to 2018-19.
