Ottawa Senators centre Josh Norris suffered an upper-body injury during Tuesday's game against the Nashville Predators.
The injury occurred in the second period while Norris was backchecking in the Ottawa zone. As Predators forward Cole Smith was controlling the puck behind Ottawa's net, Norris reached in to try to take it away. Smith pushed Norris away, sending the Senators forward falling onto the back of the net.
Norris appeared in some discomfort and slowly skated off the ice under his own power. It was announced at the start of the third period that he would not be returning to the game.
After the game, Senators head coach Jacques Martin said Norris will be evaluated on Wednesday when the club returns to Ottawa.
“What happened with Josh, I’m hoping and praying it’s not too bad,” Senators captain Brady Tkachuk said. “Unfortunately, it’s part of the game. He’s such a big part of our team. It definitely deflated us a bit.”
The injury is especially notable as Norris was limited to just eight games last season due to shoulder surgery.
Norris has 16 goals and 30 points in 50 games this season.
