The Ottawa Senators are placing goaltender Matt Murray on injured reserve after the goaltender was hit in the head against the New York Rangers, head coach D.J. Smith announced after practice.
Murray was shaken up after getting bumped during the Rangers’ second goal, when forward Chris Kreider was crowding the crease and managed to tip an Artemi Panarin pass into the net to make it 2-1. The Rangers would go on to win the game, 3-2.
Murray, 27, has struggled with injuries in his time with Ottawa, and was making his second appearance for the Senators this season after recovering from the flu during the pre-season. The team recalled Filip Gustavsson from Belleville to be the backup for Anton Forsberg.
Smith also said forward Shane Pinto was expected to be out a week or maybe more after suffering an upper-body injury against the San Jose Sharks last Thursday.
The play occurred just over a minute into the first period after Sharks defenceman Mario Ferraro hit Pinto as he rushed across the offensive blue line. Pinto then slid with all his momentum into the corner boards and left the ice holding his right forearm.
