The Ottawa Senators recalled goaltender Leevi Merilainen from the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League on Sunday.
The move comes after netminder Anton Forsberg was hurt during the warmups and missed his start Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Linus Ullmark made his second start in as many nights with University of Ottawa emergency goaltender Zack Diertz serving as the backup. Ullmark stopped 25 shots to help the Senators defeat the Penguins 3-2 in overtime.
Merilainen holds a 7-2-2 record, 2.43 goals-against average and .901 save percentage in 13 games with Belleville this season.
The 22-year-old from Oulu, Finland, was drafted in the third round, 71st overall, by Ottawa in 2020.
He has made two NHL appearances with the Senators, both during the 2022-23 season, and recorded a 0-1-1 record, 4.24 GAA and .878 save percentage.
Ottawa also loaned centre Zack Ostapchuk to Belleville. Ostapchuk has two assists in 16 games with Ottawa plus one goal and seven assists in nine games with Belleville this season.
The Senators (15-13-2) have won three consecutive games and next play Tuesday on the road against the Seattle Kraken.
